Site analysis

In order to reach the widest available market a web site must adhere to certain standards and accepted practices to truly be effective. Unlike traditional media, web sites are an interactive medium and require acknowledgment of the industries best practices. Normally when reviewing a site, there are several aspect of a site considered in our evaluations. The sum of all these parts helps to objectively assess the quality of a given site.

Speech Bubbles

Left Logic Logo

Something fun, but mostly useless for commercial prospects, is Speech Bubble. Installing this into your browser allows you to add a speech bubble to any photo on the web and share it with your friends. There are some sites that will not work (i.e. Flash, larger sites like NY Times, etc.) but overall it is a fun diversion for you and your friends on a slow afternoon.

MacUpdate Bundle

MacUpdate Promo Logo

MacUpdate has started offering a great bundle of software for a ridiculously low price. This is also the basis for MacHeist 2, which begins today as well.

[EDIT] This is not the basis of MacHeist 2, but rather a smaller bit of joy called skunkworks…my bad.

iDevelop 4 iPhone

icon_safariiphone

Apple has officially launched the iPhone developer's section to their site. It seems fairly light in offerings and logging into my developer account does not offer much more information. This weekend there is a Barcamp iPhone developer meeting in San Francisco; hopefully we will learn more about developing for the iPhone from there.

Macheist 2

macheist2

The time has come for MacHeist 2. The first MacHeist was such a huge success, even with the hiccups, that the directorate is back with more. Let's hope some of the issues that hindered the overall experience have been ironed out. I am looking forward to participating in this one.

Good design, good wine…

corkd

Two of the more well-known designers in the web development world put together a site for those who are fond of the grape. Dan Benjamin & Dan Cederholm have put together a great site for you to learn about wine, expand your knowledge and keep track of your tastings. The two things that strike me most about the site are its beautiful simplicity and what can happen when a couple of talented people put their minds together.

Who's Next

Who's Next Album Cover

I had the occasion to take bit of a road trip this weekend. I loaded up some albums and headed out. Who's Next was top of the playlist and listening to it in its entirety has reminded me how great a piece it is. Who's Next is one of the greatest rock and roll albums ever produced and shines a spotlight on all that is wrong with the music industry today.

Craaaaaaaasshhh…

Spent the better part of the last couple of weeks recovering from a hard drive failure. Although all critical components are backed up ad nauseum, several items had escaped the last backup cycle. This presents no real issues other than major inconvenience.

Even with my files backed up, getting the system back to the level of functionality that I had before the crash is a chore. All of the shortcuts, file structures, etc. had to be reestablished and I am just over half-way back to full function. My main goal was to get the client work back on line and in process to deliver and then my work and projects restored.

This probably sets me back a bit on the refresh of the site as well as some other products we have been working towards.. Ultimately, however, I learned to back up the hard in the early '90s, so all critical information was safe and secure on multiple medias.

Dylan Seuss?

dylanSeuss

Dylan Hears a Who. One of the funniest albums never produced. This combines the wit and genius of Dr. Seuss with the legendary style of Bob Dylan. It is one of those albums that you wish was real; especially now with such a burgeoning market of quality children's music. For anyone who watches Jack's Big Music show, they will get it.

Red Rock Micro & the M2

index_01

This has got to be one of the cooler items I have found just recently. Profiled in the latest issue of Studio Monthly, Red Rock Micro's M2; a 35mm lens adapter for small format video cameras. Essentially the M2 is an adapter that connects your video camera to all of your 35mm lenses floating around your studio.

Dashboard Stats

There are some cool little utilities out there for your Dashboard. I have recently discover Dashalytics, a great little widget that shows a brief overview of your Google Analytics info. Another indispensable widget is the Mint widget. These 2 items combined keep me apprised of the traffic on my sites and I highly recommend them to any web developer that wants to monitor site traffic.

Loghound

loghound

John, over at Loghound is another big brain creating some great plugins for the junior cms known as Rapidweaver. The open architecture that Ben and Dan have implemented in their software has allowed small developers like Loghound and YourHead to flourish. In and of itself, Rapidweaver is just another tool that allows some restricted development of websites; offering a sacrifice in functionality for ease of use. The beauty of their software lies in its simplicity and its ability to use plugins that make up for those shortcomings.

Loghound has developed plugin that fills that void RW users have been screaming for; Rapidblog. Up 'til now RW was a desktop app and your site had to be updated through that application. With the addition Rapidblog and the associated blogger account, you can now update your blog from any internet connection.

You install the plugin like any other RW plug; double-click it and then restart the app. From then on you add a new RapidBlog page to your site, associate it with your blogger account and publish the site to your host. From that point on you never have to open RW again; although you will want to. You can now update your blog from RW or from any computer able to access your blogger account.

This is a great addition to the app and shows what some ingenuity can do. RW is a good app, but combining a few select plugins from Loghound and YourHead turns it into a great application capable of far more complex development.

For every Star Wars fan…

makasStar

Darel Rex Finley has written a nice tut on how to make the traditional Star Wars opening sequence. It is made even easier since there is a link to an app that does it all for you as part of the article. Does not have a lot to do with commercial development, but for fan stuff it is pretty cool.

Full Single

yetiHotel

Yetihotel is a site designed to promote the newest attraction, Expedition Everest, at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The design was picked up and is featured on Full Single. The site was really supposed to be much more of an immersive experience, but as projects tend to go had to be scaled back. Still a nice site, in my mind (although I am a bit biased), that has some custom AS code for the animations and reflects the feel of the ride.

Special Olympics Florida

01-20-07_2132_icon

Special Olympics Florida is a charity that I have been involved with over the past year and half through work. "Special Olympics is a worldwide movement where one can act locally, but make a global impact. With over 300,000 competitions around the world each year, with training taking place every day, with family leaders, athlete leaders and volunteers extending our message every day, Special Olympics is no longer just an event. We are a movement, inviting the world not just to attend Games but to think, feel, and act differently about everything - to come help create a world of acceptance and inclusion for all."

Only a few more hours…

Picture 1

A couple more hours to go and I cannot wait to see what Steve announces in SF. There are tons of rumours of what will be announced today at the MacWorld show, but I hope at least we get a full screen iPod and new mobile device from Apple. A slick Apple phone would be great if they have managed to pull off the technical issues.

Oh well…tick tock.

EDIT

Well what a show it was. The Apple TV was a big deal, but naturally the item that floored everyone, especially those folks over a the CES show, was Apple's new iPhone.

Steve started the keynote talking about the new Apple TV

indexports_20070109

Apple also introduced a new Airport that offers some great features.

A lot of great technology came out of the keynote and more stuff is coming out of the show. I am looking forward to getting one of everything.

Yourhead Software's Carousel

Icon for Carousel

Isaiah Carew is one of the best shareware developers working in the Mac market today. A little background first; I began using Rapidweaver as a blog solution last year. I was just tired of finding the perfect solution, so I found a half-way decent app, RW, that offered me the ability to easily work on my site, while allowing me to run my business.

Happy New Year

cork

Well, 2006 was a great year for my family, both personally and professionally. As I reflect all that happened this past year, I am gladdened by my experiences. I am also cautiously optimistic for the new year. Many projects on the horizon and some new technologies will be revealed. First, most people will be looking to MacWorld to see if the Apple iPhone makes it debut. After that we have the newest release of Adobe's toolset, as well as a myriad of other good releases happening.

Here's to 2007!
